Drop Paper Lamp is a minimal lamp collection designed by Sweden-based studio Claesson Koivisto Rune for Time & Style. Employing the respected craft of Suifu lantern making, indigenous to Japan’s Ibaraki Prefecture, the ‘Drop Paper Lamp’ presents an innovative redefinition of the traditional lantern design. Celebrated for its robustness and longevity, this ancient technique has been reimagined in this latest creation, delivering a robust yet elegantly sculptured lighting solution. The lamp’s form, reminiscent of a gently falling water droplet, is achieved through the artful use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin strips, meticulously sheathed in traditional washi paper.
This unique assembly process not only ensures structural integrity but also enhances the lamp’s aesthetic appeal. The chosen material for the lamp’s exterior is Echizen washi paper, a heritage product recognized for its warm hue and exceptional durability. Boasting a remarkable history of approximately 1,500 years, this paper owes its robustness to the long, dense fibers of the Japanese mulberry tree, its primary raw material. Commonly found in large dimensions, this paper traditionally adorns sizable fittings such as ‘fusuma’ (sliding doors) and ‘byobu’ (folding screens), epitomizing the rich tapestry of Japanese architectural customs.
