JIAN is a minimalist ceramic objects designed by Josh Ren from the Shanghai-based practice Studio Profile. Open Object, a design-focused ceramic brand based in China, have unveiled their latest creation: a unique ceramic aroma diffuser that combines modernist design principles with meticulous craftsmanship. This ceramic piece is designed to resemble a block excavated from the ground, and it emerges from a pit fire, inviting users to partake in a sensory ritual. The block features a gentle bend at both ends, forming a crevice at its center where essential oils can be placed. Crafted using low-temperature firing techniques, the clay has the remarkable ability to absorb oils and slowly diffuse their scent.

Its sides are adorned with subtle grooves, evoking the sedimentation of earth, and its grainy texture entices users to hold and touch it, providing both a physical and spiritual sense of comfort. Open Object, established in 2017, is known for reinterpreting the concept of “Chinese ceramics.” They strive to integrate modernist design principles with meticulous craftsmanship, seeking the abstract quality of simple forms and the timeless beauty of well-balanced proportions. With their latest creation, this design-focused brand continues to push the boundaries of ceramic design, offering a piece that not only serves a practical purpose but also brings a unique sensory experience to its users.
