The Menu is a minimalist space by the Brussels and Paris-based designer, Noëmi Orgaer. Located in the designer’s hometown of Antwerp, Belgium, between the fashion hub of Sint-Andries and the artistic district of Zuid, The Menu is a multi-brand retail space that offers contemporary fashion, beauty, and design labels within a playfully chic atmosphere.
Featuring exposed concrete walls that are juxtaposed with fabric curtains, along with walnut, glass, and stainless steel furnishings, Orgaer’s design of The Menu is a visual treat. The usage of glass — specifically “kathedraal glas” or cathedral glass — nods to the retailer’s Flemish locale, and is made by local Belgian craftsmen through a traditional casting, rolling, and stretching process, resulting in its unique semi-translucent appearance. The material conveys a sense of nostalgia due to its heavy usage in Belgian buildings during the earlier half of the twentieth century.
The Menu is specially designed to be adaptable. Offering modular glass shelving that can be connected or disconnected from any of the metal structures within the store, this design allows the shopowners to showcase their products in various configurations.
Complete with a custom edition of Orgaer’s “CLOSE” armchair, specially made with cotton, the stainless steel seat features a fabric back, resembling the drawn curtain of a fitting room, perhaps referencing the joyous act of dressing through its design.
