PEEL Chair is a hemp dining chair created by PROWL Studio in collaboration with M4 Factory. It was first showcased at Milan Design Week as an elevated sustainable alternative to plastic stacking chairs. The chair is made primarily of hemp-based bioplastic, which is produced from hemp bast fiber and hurd – both of which are byproducts of industrial hemp and are conventionally discarded. The manufacturing process is similar to that of traditional plastic, but the bioplastic can be industrially composted. The chair is also finished with a cushion made of hemp and encased in a hemp bio-leather developed by Studio Veratate. According to Lauryn Menard, co-founder of PROWL, the focus should be on doing more good instead of trying to do less harm. This involves understanding the design and regeneration of products throughout their lifecycle. PEEL’s frame and cushion have different lifecycles, with the cushion being compostable at home in a matter of weeks and the frame taking about six months in an industrial composting facility. Both components can be quickly composted once they lose their comfortability.
