Oskay Store is a minimalist space located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, designed by True Thing Design Studio. The store derives its name, “OSKAY,” from the playful language used by children during games of hide-and-seek in southern Taiwan during the 70s and 80s. This concept of hiding has been cleverly translated into a design technique, giving birth to intriguing corners within the space. Faced with the challenge of a nearly six-meter-high warehouse, the design deliberately retains the original beams and columns, making extensive use of raw materials for interior decoration. This approach not only adds character but also enables potential recycling and continuity of the warehouse’s identity, ensuring it can adapt to various future business endeavors. The preservation of the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows at the entrance is a noteworthy feature. Here, a “hide-and-seek wall” has been employed to subtly blur the boundary between the interior and exterior spaces.
The layout is thoughtfully divided into store, office, and meeting spaces, with the central exposed pillar serving as a strategic divider. Semi-transparent walls crafted from frosted glass and steel panels effectively define different areas, creating a sense of separation while maintaining an open atmosphere. The towering interior walls are adorned with segmented calcium silicate boards, harmonizing with the overall aesthetic. Adding versatility to the space, varied-height platforms cater to different display needs, and their adaptability makes them suitable for various activities. The overarching ambition is to ensure that visitors can experience the essence of Kaohsiung’s commercial space in every corner of this meticulously designed environment. The Oskay Store succeeds in capturing the essence of its surroundings and cultural heritage, making it a space that not only reflects its designer’s vision but also pays homage to the rich history of Yancheng Warehouse.
