Crystal Portal is a minimalist residence by the Taipei-based interior design practice Horizontal Studio. Located in Taiwan’s capital city, the space is designed around a single architectural intervention and rethinks domestic circulation through a pair of cast-glass walls that separate the communal and private areas of the residence. 

At the heart of the home, the cast-glass walls define space through shifting light and perception instead of enclosure. Inspired by the quiet presence of crystal, the textured glass transforms throughout the day as sunlight filters through its surface and casts reflections across the surrounding interior. In doing so, the intervention establishes privacy while maintaining an open visual relationship between rooms, allowing the transition between spaces to become the emotional focal point of the home.

The restrained material palette further reinforces this interplay of light and texture: walnut joinery is paired with brushed stainless steel shelving and work surfaces, while lime-based finishes and mineral-coated walls introduce warmth that balances the reflective quality of the glass. Together, the materials create an atmosphere where transparency and opacity coexist, allowing the space to feel tactile and luminous.

With Crystal Portal, Horizontal Studio demonstrates how a single architectural gesture can fundamentally reshape the experience of a home. By replacing conventional boundaries with an intervention defined by light and materiality, the project transforms a point of transition into the central experience of everyday living.
