Do Sol is a minimalist residence by the Lisbon-based multidisciplinary design studio AB+AC. Located in the Portuguese capital, the 75 square-meter (807 square-foot) apartment transforms a former two-bedroom corner unit into a generously proportioned one-bedroom residence, creating a more harmonious layout centered around comfort and intentional living. Designed to foster focus through a paired-back color palette and tactile materials, the project rethinks the contemporary apartment as a place for reflection and everyday well-being.

The renovation begins with a reorganization of the plan, replacing the apartment’s former compartmentalized layout with a fluid L-shaped sequence that guides movement naturally from communal to private spaces. The kitchen and living room are placed at the heart of the home, while the removal of a dark central corridor introduces greater openness and allows natural light to penetrate deeper into the interior. A series of arched openings along the façade further reinforces this sense of continuity while echoing the building’s curved exterior. Elsewhere, dedicated spaces for dining, storage, and a walk-in closet encourage a slower, more intentional rhythm of daily life. In the dressing area, a high-silk-content moquette floor transforms an everyday routine into a tactile experience.

Materially, the apartment balances Japanese-inspired restraint with Lisbon’s distinctive luminosity. An off-white palette amplifies the city’s abundant natural light, while custom dark wenge-finished pine furniture introduces warmth and contrast throughout the interiors. Stainless steel details, from the kitchen countertops to industrial screens and bathroom fixtures, add contemporary character while complementing the home’s understated palette. In the bedroom, a low Japanese-inspired bed reinforces the sense of calm, while the bathroom contrasts the brightness of the living spaces through terrazzo surfaces, a dark granite-like base with scattered micro-pebbles, and a custom stainless steel shower mesh that introduces a subtle auditory dimension to the bathing experience.

With Do Sol, AB+AC demonstrates its approach to designing at the intersection of architecture and well-being. By carefully shaping circulation, light, and sensory experience, the studio creates a home that encourages restoration as much as it supports everyday living.
