Kepdarroch Farmhouse is a minimal farmhouse located in Stirling, United Kingdom, designed by Baillie Baillie Architects. Extending westward from the city of Stirling, The Carse is a low-lying agricultural landscape, bounded by the Gargunnock Hills to the south, and the Braes of Doune to the north. The area is bucolic in character and peppered with traditional farmhouses, along with their associated utilitarian buildings, steadings and cottages. Within this setting, we were asked to create a new family home on a working farm. Due to the open, often windswept landscape, it was important to ground the building by defining a series of gardens and sheltered outdoor spaces. Our proposals developed around an informal courtyard, with a series of smaller terraces positioned to take advantage of long views at different times of the day.
