The Jot Cabinet is a minimal cabinet by the Brooklyn-based furniture and object design studio, Marmar. Made using oiled walnut and white oak, the Jot Cabinet features contrasting inlays of wood to emphasize its three-hundred-and-sixty-degree graphic composition, enticing viewers to engage with the piece from multiple angles.

The piece was inspired by a pair of pants Marmar Studio founder, Ingemar Hagen Keith sewed using deadstock textiles, where they created a new pattern for the garment by reassembling pieces of the fabric. Intrigued by the serendipitous intersections and divergences of the lines of the pattern, Keith applied this technique to the design of the Jot Cabinet, further exploring the interplay between flatness and dimensionality. As the piece’s wrapped inlays flow along intersecting planes, its entire pattern shifts, creating an ever-dynamic constellation.

The Jot Cabinet joins the independent studio’s growing roster of endearing designs and is a continuation of Marmar Studio’s investigation of the relationship between minimalism and familiarity.
