The Brut collection is a minimalist furniture collection by the Amsterdam-based product design studio, Mokko. Consisting of two tables, a bench, and a shelving unit, Brut is characterized by a simplistic, yet, rhythmic interplay of forms and negative space while drawing inspiration from brutalism and the Amsterdam School style.

Taking cues from these two distinct design movements — the raw, unornamented, functionality of brutalism and the expressive, fluidity of works from the Amsterdam School style — the Brut collection combines these two aesthetics to create a series of furniture pieces that are simultaneously minimalist, honest and decorative.

The Brut Table and its narrower counterpart, the Brut Slim Table, for instance, are characterized by their Amsterdam School-inspired wooden voluminous columns, which support the piece’s sturdy tabletop, while the geometry of the overall form nods to a more brutalist style. Complementing the Brut Tables is the Brut Bench, a long wooden seat whose design mimics the tables. Rounding off the collection is the Brut Bibliothèque, a simple yet sculptural shelving unit that also features geometrically undulating columns that act as the upright support of the shelf, while simple wooden planks make up the individual shelves.

Overall, the Brut collection creates a unique aesthetic of its own, balancing raw materiality and subdued forms with geometrically expressive detailing. Designed by Mokko’s founder, Aad Bos, and crafted by local makers in the Netherlands using high-quality, sustainable materials, each piece in the collection is custom-made and is available in either European oak and American walnut with a variety of finishing options.
