The Appartement Atelier is a minimalist apartment by the Paris-based architecture practice, Agathe Marimbert. Located in the Montmartre district of Paris, the renovation transforms a former artist’s workshop into a compact and light-filled home for a young resident. Central to the design is the decision to fully engage with the space’s north-facing glass roof, opening the living areas toward this façade in order to capture and distribute natural light throughout the interior.
The kitchen and living room on the ground floor are oriented directly toward the glass verrière, allowing daylight to become a defining presence within the apartment. A custom metal staircase rises from this space to a mezzanine level overlooking the kitchen, reinforcing visual continuity between floors while maximizing the limited footprint. Running alongside the stair, a full-height bookshelf in wood and metal accompanies the ascent and introduces additional storage.
Material choices in the apartment add a sense of tactility and visual intrigue, with wood and metal used throughout to create a contemporary look. Alongside the staircase and shelving system, metal accents appear in the kitchen through the countertops and backsplash, while wood drawers and cabinetry offer a warm contrast .Upstairs, the bathroom introduces a playful reference to the neighborhood’s traditional bistros. Rich green porcelain stoneware tiles and cabochon floor details evoke the atmosphere of Parisian cafés in the 18th arrondissement, adding a layer of character.
Appartement Atelier reflects Agathe Marimbert’s broader approach to renovation, where existing constraints become opportunities to create thoughtful spaces that feel both practical and personable.
