Blurton Road is a minimal home located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Emil Eve. A Victorian terrace house was transformed into an open, bright residence with a double-height library and a warm material palette inspired by the owners’ passion for mid-century design. The goal of Blurton Road was to depart from the original Victorian proportions and convey a sense of generosity with spaces for relaxing, playing, and socializing all throughout the house. It was created for a young creative couple with young children. A crucial design decision was to create a double-height “library” in the middle of the home, which reoriented the interior and established visual links between the living areas on the two floors. From the kitchen, a new stairway with fumed wood treads leads up to a mezzanine with a glazed screen wall looking out onto the living area. Oak full-height shelf unifies both floors into a single, aesthetically pleasing area. Because of its shallow pitch and wide treads, the stairs are regarded as a part of the space.
