Charleville is a minimal space located in Dublin, Ireland, designed by Scullion Architects. This project breathes new life into a compact artisan cottage in Dublin’s north inner city. Using a strategy of removing what was dilapidated, we leave remnants of previous extensions, allowing us to re imagine a new building in the ruins of the old house around the garden. Two centrally located rooftop lightwells penetrate the upper floor, drawing sun in from above providing abundant light to the middle of the house, overlooked from above by two glass end-walls of the upstairs bathroom. The materials used outside are machined, metallic and reflective. This draws the beauty out of the dirty, handmade disorder of the surrounding Dublin inner-city.
