GOB 17 is a minimalist home located in Valencia, Spain, designed by DG Arquitecto. The narrative centers around a family, including a couple and their playful puppy, who decide it’s time for a lifestyle shift. They move from the structured American Mid-Century aesthetic to embrace the layered history and culture of the Mediterranean. The initial step in their journey is finding the right location, emphasizing the importance of selecting a property before any permanent decisions are made to avoid unforeseen constraints. Their search concludes with the discovery of a unique property within Valencia’s Historical District, close to the River Turia park. This 19th-century noble building, notable for its prime location and double main façades, contrasts sharply with the orderly grid layout that characterizes Manhattan, designed to ensure uniform light and air quality but limiting architectural creativity.
The redesign project seeks to harmonize various elements of the building, ensuring visual connectivity and flow. It introduces two main volumes that not only welcome but also guide the observer’s gaze, blending the urban exterior with the verdant interior courtyard. The approach respects the original structure, allowing it to remain visible and integral to the new design. Material choices reflect a balance between tradition and modernity. The original construction is highlighted with a matte white finish, lending it a timeless quality and helping to balance its visual weight. Conversely, new additions are characterized by contemporary simplicity, with functionality supported by a natural material palette. This includes oak veneer for furniture, terracotta straw finish flooring, ivory-toned quartzite that complements the wood and white walls, and brass accents.
