Haus Tirol is a minimal home located in South Tirol, Italy, designed by John Pawson. The aim was to design a modern family home that is rooted in a sense of place and reflects the local vernacular. The traditional farmhouse style with gables and pitched roofs is prevalent in the area, as is the castle typology. However, rather than simply copying these styles, the architects sought to create a design that is contextually appropriate by using local materials and a form that reflects the natural features of the site and surrounding landscape. For example, the horizontal volumes of the building echo the lines of the vines on the hill, and the shape of the building conforms to the contours of the land.
