Hingham House is a minimalist home located in Hingham, Massachusetts, designed by CO-G. The project features an intricate yet continuous pattern of 4-inch vertical grooves that traverse a variety of surfaces, skillfully balancing negative and positive space. The choice of color is also reflective of the historic context; a muted green-gray palette drenches all surfaces, conferring a subdued tonality on the main floor. This monochromatic approach not only contributes to an updated aesthetic but also stands in contrast to preserved historic details. Originally, v-groove boards were a defining feature, enveloping spaces like the fireplace wall, dining room, and kitchen.
The updated design builds upon this by varying the groove spacing across different surfaces. For a touch of modern convenience, the house incorporates SemiHandmade grooved cabinet fronts set on Ikea frames in both the kitchen and living room. The innovation doesn’t stop there; the existing doors in the home have been veneered with new v-groove panels, achieving the impression of seamlessly integrated ‘hidden’ doors. As for the original chair rails that are pervasive throughout the home, they’ve been reimagined to serve as picture ledges, displaying the artwork of the resident children.
