Home for Family is a minimalist house located in Japan, designed by Koki Sugawara Architects. The considerable challenge that this project presented lay in its size. Spread over two levels, the property spans an expansive 178 square meters – a scale significantly larger than required for a typical family unit. Notwithstanding the client’s aspirations for a thorough refurbishment, the sheer size of the house threatened to inflate the renovation costs significantly. A strategic analysis of the family’s space requirements led to a revelation. The ample space offered by the ground floor itself proved sufficient for the family’s immediate needs. Consequently, the team decided to keep the first-floor renovations minimal, designing it with an understated aesthetic and reserving it for potential use by the family’s elder generation in the future. The renovation’s primary focus thus pivoted to the second floor. In a thoughtful approach that went beyond mere horizontal configuration, the team delved into the intricate details of vertical space utilization, crafting a diverse and harmonious living environment.
