Waveney Avenue is a minimalist house located in London, United Kingdom, designed by SAM Architects. The redesigning process incorporated alterations on every level. A new rear extension on the ground floor, as well as a freshly constructed loft extension, have been thoughtfully added to ensure the residence meets the evolving needs of its occupants. The design philosophy centers on an elegant simplicity, using durable materials that blend seamlessly with the surroundings. The rear extension, constructed with light-hued Danish bricks, introduces a striking visual interplay with the property’s terrazzo accents. Attention to detail is evident in the construction of large, custom-made oak framed windows, which establish a harmonious flow between the kitchen and dining area and the garden.
The brickwork, consistent with the rear extension, forms the foundation of outdoor elements including planting beds, retaining walls, and benches, thereby maintaining a unified aesthetic. The interior mirrors this design approach, exuding warmth and tactile richness. Central to the interior design is an expansive spiral staircase connecting the refurbished bedrooms and bathrooms to the rest of the house. The newly built loft serves as a personal retreat for the family’s eldest member. Notably, it features a small balcony overlooking the rear garden. In a nod to the property’s historical essence, the loft’s construction employs yellow stock brick, retrieved from the ground floor. This harmonizes the new addition with the existing structure. A circular skylight punctuates the roof, pouring natural light into the loft while doubling as a distinct architectural feature upon entry.
