Les Mains Dorées Gwanghwamun is a minimalist bakery cafe located in Seoul, South Korea, designed by natt. This three-floor project in Gwanghwamun’s heart demonstrates how personal memory can inform spatial design through aesthetic references translating client’s Paris student experience into contemporary Seoul hospitality environment. The inspiration from sculptor Brancusi’s studio near Centre Pompidou, specifically photograph of Bird in Space standing before red-painted wall, defines the project’s aesthetic foundation establishing key tones of red and brass connecting Brancusi and Les Mains Dorées throughout building.

Design elements expressing red-brass theme begin from exterior including red heart on white facade, brass logo embedded in floor, first-floor red walls and brass shelving, second-floor red pillar grounding staircase, and third-floor red CARIMATE chairs by Danish brand Fritz Hansen. This material and color consistency creates visual continuity across varied functional zones while the specific element choices demonstrate how single palette can manifest through diverse applications from architectural features to furniture selections.

Spatial tone unification employs cherry wood, oak wood, brass shelving, and soft red accents creating warm yet refined atmosphere. This material palette demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how wood tones can ground bolder color choices preventing red from overwhelming spatial character while brass elements introduce reflective surfaces enhancing natural light distribution. The cherry and oak wood combination provides textural variation within similar tonal ranges preventing monotony while maintaining overall warmth.

Gwanghwamun’s dynamic urban context mixing office workers, creatives, and international visitors informs each floor programming for different spatial behaviors. First floor outdoor and compact tables accommodate brief visits appropriate for quick coffee service while second floor varied seating arrangements support conversation and flexible use reflecting longer dwell times. Third floor lounge collaborating with Fritz Hansen offers calm retreat demonstrating how vertical programming can separate fast-paced street-level transactions from contemplative upper-floor experiences.

The Fritz Hansen collaboration emphasizes cafe’s refined sensibility with lounge highlight being Egg Chair positioned by large window overlooking ginkgo trees – subtle gesture linking craftsmanship, memory, and place. This specific furniture placement demonstrates how iconic design pieces can create moments of visual and experiential focus within hospitality environments while the ginkgo tree view connects interior occupation with Seoul’s urban landscape and seasonal changes.
