Marvila is a minimalist home located in Lisbon, Portugal, designed by Atelier José Andrade Rocha. The design shifts away from rigid functional definitions, instead embracing a sense of openness and celebration. The street-facing façade remains unchanged, subtly hinting at the internal transformation. At the back, a newly extended rear façade emerges, not as a stark contrast but as a complementary addition, layering the building’s history. The extension strengthens the connection to the garden, highlighting a renewed appreciation for natural elements such as sunlight, soil, and water—echoing the simplicity and vitality that became particularly important during the pandemic. The interior employs a blend of familiar materials that have been subtly adapted. Structural wooden panels treated with green oil, bluish industrial flooring, painted steel elements, wooden framing, Sintra limestone, and river pebbles create a cohesive yet textured environment. These materials reinforce a balance between tradition and innovation, aligning with the project’s broader themes of adaptability and connection to nature.
