Rockbound is a minimalist residence located in Musquodoboit Harbour, Canada, designed by Omar Gandhi Architects. The project was driven by the clients’ desire for a sanctuary that both offers seclusion and connects with the natural beauty of the Atlantic coastline. Situated on a rocky shore, Rockbound is a testament to architectural resilience, designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions typical of the area. The choice of materials that age with dignity reflects a commitment to sustainability and harmony with the landscape. The home’s layout, with its main living areas aligned with the coast, maximizes views of the surrounding islands and the distant Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, crafting a dynamic relationship with the sea. At the heart of Rockbound’s design is its structural ingenuity, which remained hidden beneath its elegant exterior. A challenge during construction arose with the discovery of a bedrock seam, potentially compromising the project.

This obstacle was overcome through a collaborative effort, resulting in the strategic placement of micro-piles to support the structure. This solution ensured Rockbound could withstand extreme weather without sacrificing its aesthetic grace. The design thoughtfully balances private and public spaces, creating a welcoming entrance that leads to expansive views of the bay. The interior design, with its warm tones, complements the natural palette of the surroundings, fostering a serene atmosphere. The transition between indoor and outdoor spaces is blurred with large decks that extend the living areas into the landscape, allowing for an immersive experience with nature. Rockbound stands as a collaborative achievement, where the expertise of builders and consultants merged to push design boundaries. The detailing, from the framing of windows to the integration of garage doors and exterior cladding, reflects a meticulous approach to achieving a cohesive aesthetic.
