Sei is a minimalist gallery located in Kyoto, Japan, designed by koyori. Sei is housed in a carefully renovated machiya, a type of traditional wooden townhouse. This renovation diverges from the typical storefront in the area, dedicating itself entirely to showcasing the works of craft artists. Originally, the machiya had its own distinct character, shaped over years and altered through various renovations by past owners, including the application of oil paint on its exposed framework. The restoration aimed to peel back these layers, restoring the machiya’s authentic form while blending in contemporary design elements. The ground floor of the gallery is a study in minimalism.

It boasts a predominantly white interior that leverages natural light to create an open, linear space stretching from the entrance to Sanjo Street. This design choice fosters an environment where the artistry of the displayed crafts can truly stand out. Upstairs, the second floor contrasts sharply with the brightness of the first. It functions as a meeting room and additional exhibition space. Here, the use of Kurotani washi, a traditional Japanese paper, imparts a more subdued atmosphere. The design deliberately minimizes natural light, crafting a private and tranquil setting, a stark departure from the openness below.
