Steel House is a minimal residence located in Gadigal, Australia, designed by Retallack Thompson. Situated on the site of a long-vanished cottage, the Steel House stands as a modern interpretation of the past. This innovative structure, built on the remnants of a home that succumbed to fire at the dawn of the 20th century, seeks to mend the disrupted heritage pattern of the area. The novel design coexists harmoniously with the adjacent sandstone dwellings, creating a cohesive courtyard that breathes new life into the formerly dormant laneway. The inner courtyard serves as an oasis of serenity in the midst of the bustling city, offering a secluded space for the residents.

Shielded from prying eyes and the noise of urban life, the courtyard’s design optimizes the advantages of its central location. The Steel House’s exterior features a sanded aluminum cladding that shimmers with reflections of the sky and clouds. This intentional design choice honors the memory of the original cottage without attempting to recreate it. By employing a material that is both visually striking and reminiscent of the passage of time, the Steel House remains conscious of its historical roots while forging its own unique identity.
