Tribeca Triplex is a minimalist apartment located in New York, New York, designed by Jae Joo. The residence distinguishes itself through its Brutalist architectural design, characterized by a bluestone-clad facade. The exterior’s bold style extends into the interior, where a focus on clean lines and textures has inspired a meticulously designed space. According to the designer, Joo, the goal was to achieve a balance of comfort and dramatic flair, resulting in a home that serves as both a peaceful retreat and a canvas for creativity. Joo recounts beginning the project four years prior, tasked by clients to craft a space within the heart of Tribeca that was not only visually appealing but conducive to making memories and supporting family growth.

The property, spanning nearly 4,000 square feet and featuring three bedrooms along with four-and-a-half bathrooms, was selected for its potential to reflect the family’s strong bonds through its solid and welcoming presence. The clients’ preference for a neutral color scheme led to a design strategy that preserved tranquility while adding depth and character. This was achieved through the use of metal, stone, and plaster, ensuring a cohesive appearance. Materials with a natural patina were essential in imbuing the space with a sense of history. Describing the home’s interior, Joo highlights its robust and raw ambiance, accentuated by distinctive architectural elements such as a curved staircase, stacked concrete ceilings, and textured columns.

The challenge was to fill the expansive, open areas without imparting an impersonal or sterile atmosphere. The introduction of new, fluid designs was intended to complement existing features and foster a connection between the home’s architecture and its inhabitants. Key features of the 3,800-square-foot residence include three private terraces, a striking sculptural staircase that enhances the main living area’s scale, and a selection of art that adds vibrancy throughout. One of the design’s most unique aspects is a “melting” revolving door leading to a children’s playroom, illustrating Joo’s innovative approach to combining playfulness with functionality.
