Cap is a minimalist shelf designed by Cologne-based studio Gerdesmeyer Krohn. The first layer, designed as a conventional shelf, presents ample room for compact items—be it a modest table lamp, petite candles, or a collection of your favorite drinkware. The underlying rationale is to provide an uncluttered space for those diminutive essentials often lost amid larger items, thus, subtly emphasizing their importance and existence. However, it’s the second layer that adds a novel twist to this utilitarian object—the vertical back pocket. This additional storage area accommodates books or magazines, not only storing them effectively but also exhibiting them in an appealing manner. It turns the typically private storage function into a public display, integrating aesthetics into a functional element. The construction of the ‘Cap’ is a blend of strength and visual appeal, crafted from steel sheets. Subsequently, it undergoes a galvanization process, yielding a distinctive blue hue that ensures each piece is not only robust but also visually unique. In essence, it’s a tasteful fusion of industrial materials and contemporary design.
