Belgrave Road is a minimalist residence by the London-based architecture and interior design studio, PROP Architects. Located within the Aldersbrook and Lake House Conservation Area in East London, the project reworks and extends an Edwardian end-of-terrace house for a young family, transforming what was once a fragmented and poorly lit interior into a cohesive, light-filled home while carefully restoring historic details that had been lost over time.
The intervention centers on reconnecting the previously disjointed ground floor through a series of considered additions and upgrades. At the rear, a single-story extension replaces the pre-existing brick addition and conservatory, introducing an open-plan kitchen, dining, and informal living area filled with natural light. Pale cream brick walls are paired with slim aluminum-framed glazing that stretches upward toward the parapet, creating a contrast between solid and transparent surfaces that enhances the sense of openness and verticality. Alongside this, a two-story side extension accommodates additional spaces, including new bathrooms, a utility room, and a downstairs powder room. Due to the home’s location within a conservation area, the project adopts a material language closely aligned with the original Edwardian design, echoing traditional forms found throughout the surrounding neighborhood. Elsewhere, new sash windows, thermal upgrades, the installation of an air-source heat pump, and restored facades further modernize the residence.
Inside, warm and natural materials create a sense of calm and lend to a contemporary atmosphere: dark oak joinery contrasts against cream-toned microcement floors and soft white walls, while whitewashed timber ceiling joists introduce texture and warmth overhead. Dusty greens and muted pink accents add subtle color throughout the fitted elements, softening the otherwise restrained palette and reinforcing the home’s inviting character.
With Belgrave Road, PROP Architects demonstrates its commitment to context-driven design, creating a home that feels both rooted in its surroundings and thoughtfully adapted for modern family life.
