House in East Ryde replaces a load-bearing partition wall with a single steel beam, freeing a compact three-bedroom home to reorganize around a family that wanted to cook, work, and unwind in one open volume. Perched on a rise above bushland on Wallumedegal Country in East Ryde, a Sydney suburb in New South Wales, Australia, the renovation is the work of Charmaine Pang Architect, a practice based in Sydney’s Inner West.

In place of the removed wall, the practice inserted a freestanding joinery pod that does two jobs at once. One face anchors the open living space, marking the transition from kitchen to lounge. The other turns outward into a discreet study, with a drop zone for keys and bags at the entry beside it. The home’s existing ceiling beams span uninterrupted over the pod, so the original structure of the house stays legible even as the plan beneath it changes.

The kitchen moved to the northeast corner of the plan, trading its old position for morning light and elevated district views. An existing window opening was reused but raised, its sill lifted to form an upstand along the new kitchen bench, and awning windows throughout were swapped for casements to improve cross ventilation. In the living area, sliding doors stack flush against the face of the rear wall, opening the room fully onto the garden.

A separate bathroom renovation, completed as an earlier stage of the project, paired variegated small format tile with red terrazzo flooring, picking up the reddish tones of the home’s original brickwork. Vertical timber wall paneling elsewhere reinforces that same original character, while timber joinery finishes tie the interior to its bush setting. The living-area works, the larger of the two stages at 570 sqft, were carried out on a budget of $370,000 that pushed the design toward a few decisive structural moves.

Where two disconnected living areas once kept the family apart through the day, the kitchen island has become the anchor for weekend mornings, and the kids spend more of the day playing outside in the garden.
