Mayfair Residence is a minimal home located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Child Studio. London’s Mayfair district is known for its rich history and grand architecture, but tucked away in a hidden mews courtyard lies a residence that perfectly blends past and present. The design team at Child Studio drew inspiration from Yves Saint Laurent’s Grand Salon at Rue de Babylone in Paris, using this as a starting point to create a space that effortlessly balances Art Deco references with the Modernism of the 1960s and 70s. The result is a spacious lounge that serves as a social hub for guests, where they can relax in a warm and inviting environment. Collectable 20th-century furniture pieces mix with an eclectic collection of sculptures, heirlooms, and art books, all contributing to the effortlessly lived-in atmosphere.

The focal point of the lounge is a grand undulating fireplace, positioned beneath a linear skylight that floods the space with natural light. The fireplace’s gentle curves were expertly crafted from polished plaster, contributing to the room’s soft and ethereal atmosphere. Delicate Japanese paper lamps by Ingo Maurer rest atop white Calacatta Viola marble blocks, providing a tactile element to the space. The asymmetrical coffee table was designed specifically for this project by Child Studio. Moving into the master bedroom, vintage charm takes center stage with a ‘Valet’ chair designed by Hans Wegner in 1953 and produced by Johannes Hansen, set against a birch plywood wardrobe. In the serene dining room, green velvet ‘Indochine’ chairs by Charlotte Perriand are paired with a delicate bamboo ‘Uchiwa’ pendant by Ingo Maurer.

The room also features several bespoke pieces designed specifically for the space, including a round maple table, a freeform rug, and a mahogany bookcase adorned in deep red Rosso Levanto marble cladding. The living room in the converted mews building offers an atmospheric mix of Art Deco and Mid-century Modernism, a testament to the designer’s ability to create spaces that exude timeless elegance. Child Studio’s Mayfair residence is a hidden gem that perfectly balances past and present, offering guests a warm and inviting environment that seamlessly blends old and new.
