Vessels of Imperfection is a minimalist collection of vessels created by Vienna-based artist Anna Zimmermann. This assortment stands out for its unique approach to the metal casting process. The typical practice in metal casting involves smoothing out seams and flaws to achieve a flawless finish. However, this collection takes a different route by accentuating these imperfections, transforming them into the main attraction of each piece. The project is a collaborative effort with Martin Petermann, a skilled metal casting artisan based in Vienna, and is supported by co/rizom. The process employed here is sand casting, which is distinct for its use of both an upper and lower box, filled entirely with sand. In this method, a model is first shaped in the sand, creating a void once removed. This void is then filled with molten metal to form the cast object. A notable feature of sand casting is the seam created by the interface of the two mold halves. This seam, usually considered a by-product to be eliminated, is instead deliberately emphasized in the “Vessels of Imperfection” collection. The artisans achieve this by etching into the sand before casting, allowing the molten metal to fill these etchings and accentuate the seam.
